When We Make Poor Decisions

Image
Sometimes we do things as an armed citizen that we normally would not do if we happened to be unarmed. Maybe owning a firearm gives us a greater sense of security than we really have. This next gun fight has a few lessons to learn from. The good news is, the victim survived the encounter and repelled the threat. Unfortunately, the story is lost on a wasted conversation about whether the victim will face charges for using an AK-47 type rifle to fend off multiple suspects during a home invasion. There is way too much to learn from in this story to waste time talking about whether the victim will be charged for a firearm offense.     A report by Mark Price with the Charlotte Observer (accompanied with a short video) indicated around 2130 hours on July 7th, three male subjects approached the victims home on foot in the 700 block of Pinestead Road located in Escambia County, Florida. The view from the door bell camera depicts a nice residential neighborhood. The victi...

Learn From Your Successes Also

Image
It's nice to be able to report on a successful self-defense shooting where only the bad buys catch the business end of the firearm. However, there are still lessons we can learn from this incident that may help others in the future. Coming home late at night is always a risky proposition. Add into the mix of having the whole family in the car and things can get sideways quickly.     A recent abc13.com report by Brhe Berry highlights the dangers a family faced arriving home on Sunday evening near mid-night. They arrived home in their SUV. Mom was driving, Dad riding shotgun and their two infant children were in the back seat, each in their respective child seat. The home was located in a NW Harris County neighborhood. While there was the occasional residential street lighting, the plethora of vehicles in driveways and parked along the curb, coupled with many mature trees, provided ample shadows for bad guys to lay in wait.     A video of the e...

Most People Can't Handle Real "Gun Control"

Image
I continue to stand by that statement with every fiber of my being. "Gun Control" is not about the laws and regulations concerning firearms and ammunition. Real "gun control" is about you, the gun owner, being responsible for every aspect of your weapon 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You never get a day off from thinking about your firearm. It should remain at the forefront of your mind every single day. If you don't think you can live with that burden of responsibility, do us all a favor and get rid of your gun.        In an article today by Newsweek's Xander Landen, a child (6-7 year-old) brought a loaded handgun to Les Myers Summer Camp in Concord, North Carolina. The child apparently  informed a counselor that they had a gun inside their lunch box. Staff seized the weapon and contacted local police. After some investigation it was determined that the child harbored no intent to harm anyone and there were no threats made with the weap...

Lax Gun Laws Promote a Lack of Training = Disaster

Image
The decisions we make as a society and the laws our elected officials put on the books will have consequences in the future. Many Americans believe in their right to self-defense and their constitutional right to keep and bear arms. There is nothing wrong with that idea. However, when we blindly follow the suggestions by pro-gun groups and elected politicians that rely on donations from those same pro-gun groups, that there should be no laws passed to restrict a person's ability to purchase a firearm, you will eventually end up in chaos.      As with any right that is granted by the constitution, there needs to be limits or regulations to prevent the right from getting out of control. Freedom of speech is one example. We all have the freedom to speak our mind, but yell "fire" in a crowded theater or tell an airline hostess that the bomb located in your carry on is likely to explode soon, and you'll find out really quick that there are limits to fr...

Not In Your Vehicle!

Image
Sometimes we must state the obvious in order to drive home the point, so here goes. Your  vehicle is not an authorized storage location for your firearm. In fact, I'll go as far as to say that I don't care what your state laws are concerning firearms in vehicles. Common sense dictates that leaving a firearm inside your vehicle when it is unattended is a really bad idea and puts the weapon at high risk of being stolen.  Your vehicle is a target for criminals. Cars are broken into all across America multiple times per day. It makes no sense to leave a deadly weapon unattended in your vehicle for any length of time. It does not matter if the vehicle is locked. The bad guys know how to break into your car. That's what they do.  While we are on the subject, it's also a really bad idea to leave your loved ones unattended in your vehicle as well. Especially your children who are unable to defend themselves.     A recent example I'll share with ...

Self-Defense, Not A One Tool Endeavor

Image
The fact that you survive a self-defense shooting is not necessarily an accurate measure of whether it was a justified shooting or not. We can't always call it a good day simply because we made it home and the bad guy didn't. When you decide to become an armed citizen, you must think beyond your right to keep and bear arms. Where you travel with your weapon, your physical condition, the expected crowd at your destination, environmental conditions, probable fields of fire, known or expected threats, etc. are all things you'll need to consider every time you walk out the door.     In  late June of 2022, a news report indicated an armed woman shot another female in self-defense while inside a grocery store located in Des Moines, Iowa. It was 10 o'clock in the morning on a weekend when our female victim was in the store shopping. At some point, another woman began physically assaulting our victim. It was reported by the victim that the attack was unprovoked...
