The setting was a rural North Carolina neighborhood. A sunny 15 October Saturday, 2022. It was nearing 1800hrs. A two year old boy was playing in the front yard of his families home in Benson. His mother and father were inside their home. A peaceful fall evening for a child to enjoy. So how did this two year old boy end up dying from an apparent gunshot wound to the head? Information contained in various news reports indicated the young boy managed to climb up into the open door of his fathers pickup truck. (Research located an online photo of the family, showing them standing in front of a white, full size Chevy pickup.) Once inside the truck, the boy's attention was quickly drawn to a loaded Smith and Wesson 40 caliber handgun that was left laying insecure on the front seat of the truck.
